Reception for The Exhibition
This exhibition will be the first presentation of images from a newly retrieved collection of historic photographs of the workers who rebuilt San Francisco. A part of the exhibition will be the recent photographic work of Joseph A. Blum. Historic San Francisco Earthquake Reconstruction Images from: Schmid – Allmond Album and The San Francisco Public Library.
The historical photos are the most extensive collection of post-earthquake images of workers rebuilding San Francisco ever exhibited. They were taken by an unknown photographer and are part of a collection known as the Schmid-Allmond Album. Dating from April, 1906 until early 1908, these fascinating photographs show carpenters, bricklayers, masons, ironworkers, teamsters, piledrivers, laborers, operators, and electrical workers rebuilding well known sites such as the Bank of California and the Palace Hotel, as well as homes and businesses throughout the city.
The contemporary photographs, taken by Joseph A. Blum, document many of the same crafts, as well as boilermakers, painters, and glaziers. Blum's images bring the workers and their labor process to the forefront. In these striking photographs we see workers engaged in high-rise construction in downtown San Francisco, rebuilding the Conservatory of Flowers and the Ferry Building, and constructing the Al Zampa Memorial Bridge over the Carquinez Strait and the new East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge.

Mike Connor will be honoring the workers who rebuilt San Francisco after the quake with a new mural for this exhibition. His murals take us through the history and battles of the US labor movement.

Twenty Years of Labor Art
Artist Scott Sayre’s open studio reception
Scott Sayre has painted labor murals throughout the West Coast in many union halls.
As a child I was taught that if you wanted to learn a skill, to join a union. After leaving a 14-year career as a Santa Fe Railroad conductor I became a Muralist. From there I turned my talent to design and create murals for Unions across the Nation. Bringing culture to America the Union way was natural for my own consciousness as an artist then as it is today. The history of the American worker, celebrated through the art of the mural is a sure way to communicate those values and pride to the people.
The exhibit to be held beginning July 5th will feature reproductions of murals for the building trades, including, Plumbers and Steam Fitters Union, and Ironworkers, Carpenters, Sheet Metal Workers and the International Asbestos Workers. The Dates range from 1986-2006. The original mural, The History of Printing will be on display as well as smaller works. Available will be posters, a slide show and reproductions of the murals.
