This panel will draw upon the experiences of two historians who have written administrative and cultural histories of the New Deal, by focusing on Frances Perkins, FDR’s Secretary of Labor (1933-1945) who was an advocate for workers rights, and the pro-labor legislation passed by the Roosevelt administration during the Great Depression. We will also examine how workers’ stories were recorded by the WPA Federal Writers Project.
Panel:
Christopher N. Breiseth – Historian/ National New Deal Preservation Association
Dr. Jerrold Hirsch – Professor Emeritus of History, Truman State College. Author: “Portrait of America: A Cultural History of the Federal Writers Project,” will discuss “Labor Lore” and The Federal Writers Project.
