SUMMARY:Race to the bottom: Vietnamese female migrant workers’ vulnerability\, double burden and health risks in market socialism
DESCRIPTION:Zoom event \nSince the 1990s\, Vietnam’s export-led growth has relied heavily on young women migrating from rural areas to work in the world’s major manufacturing hubs for garment and footwear factories\, and increasingly\, electronics. Almost four decades later\, many of these workers face growing insecurity as they age\, still having to navigate unstable employment that fails to keep up with rising costs\, while having to care for their children in poor-quality temporary migrant workers’ housing. Behind the country’s impressive economic growth figures\, workers toil under exploitative conditions and low pay\, creating vicious cycles of insecurity\, forcing them to constantly search for jobs that could make ends meet. At the same time\, the socialist state’s narratives of inclusive development and moral rhetoric of care for working people fail to deliver adequate social insurance with weakening social insurance policies to protect migrant workers at the bottom of the global supply chains from uncertainties in late-stage capitalism. \nAfter screening one documentary and 3 migrant worker-initiated social media clips with their own voices\, this session will discuss the impacts of Vietnam’s global integration on the everyday lives of the female migrant workers and how they seize possible work opportunities in a system fraught with risks\, while trying to lead a dignified life for themselves and their families and to empower each other. \n4 clips total (around 15 minutes) \nFirst clip: Union of Catholic Asian News (7 min): Vietnam’s workers leave cities for rural hometowns as economic woes increase https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpHAA0jcZx8 \n3 Instagram clips: https://www.instagram.com/thaochonsonglanh?igsh=aWZvNTI5dzRxMzZ3 \n– Dinner of 13\,000 VND (showing a meager dinner of a migrant mother and her two children\, and their need for cultural entertainment)\n– Dinner of 65\,000 VND for a Migrant Mother and Two Children at a rental place in Bình Dương province (showing a lot of expenses that a migrant mother has to pay for her family) \n– The process to create an Instagram channel (an initiative of a female migrant worker to use social media to document their lives and her willingness to share with others) \nAngie’s bio: \nDr. Angie Ngọc Trần was born and raised in Saigon\, Vietnam. She obtained a doctorate in political economy at the University of Southern California and has been teaching at CSU Monterey Bay since 1996. She has researched and published on transnational labor migration and resistance in Vietnam and Malaysia\, as well as the farm guestworkers program between the US and Mexico. Her 2013 book\, Ties that Bind: Cultural Identity\, Class\, and Law in Vietnam’s Labor Resistance\, chronicles over 100 years of labor movements\, domestic labor migration\, and resistance in Vietnam since French colonial rule to Vietnam’s market socialism in the 21st century. Her 2022 book\, Ethnic Dissent and Empowerment: Economic Migration between Vietnam and Malaysia\, integrates ethnicity\, class\, gender\, religion and cultural resources\, and third space of dissent and empowerment of five different ethnic groups in Vietnam while working as guestworkers in Malaysia and after they return to Vietnam. During and after Covid-19\, she published articles to expose female worker vulnerabilities\, exploitative and abusive working conditions and sexual violence\, under the Vietnam-Saudi labor agreement that sends Vietnamese female workers to work as maids in Saudi Arabia. Her 2026 book chapter\, “Weakening of Social Protection in Vietnam: Labor Legislation\, Cicada Capital\, Civil Society\,” analyzes creeping marketization\, privatization\, and financialization of social protection in Vietnam\, leaving workers scrambling to fend for themselves and their families. Her current project on “H-2A Mexican Agricultural Guestworkers: Navigating opportunities and risks in California and improving quality of life in Mexico” exposes not only employers’ control\, exploitation and sexual harassment/violence\, but also how farmworkers navigate the system to empower themselves\, their families and communities. \nDr. Angie Ngọc Trần\, Ph.D.\nProfessor\, Political Economy\n[She/her/ella/cô (in Vietnamese)]\nBio and Publications: https://researchprofiles.csumb.edu/en/persons/angie-ngoc-tran\nAuthor of Ethnic Dissent and Empowerment: Economic Migration between Vietnam and Malaysia\, University of Illinois Press\, 2022\nEar to Asia Podcast (May 2024)\nSocial Sciences and Global Studies Department\nCalifornia State University\, Monterey Bay

SUMMARY:Walk - SF General Strike - Bloody Thursday - by Gifford Hartman
DESCRIPTION:Meet at Harry Bridges Plaza south side Tower – Embarcadero at Market St.\, SF \nWalk with Gifford Hartman (about 2 hours) \nNinety-two years ago (1934)\, a great battle took place between striking workers and the police and National Guard along the waterfront alongside the piers of San Francisco’s Embarcadero. We will look at the causes of the 1934 General Strike\, why it was successful\, and how the issues from that strike are still relevant to working class people today. The current movement against police murder of black and brown people can draw lessons from the way strikers invited black workers into their ranks to prevent racist exclusion from breaking their strike. We explain how an 83-day West Coast Waterfront Strike exploded into the 4-day General Strike that paralyzed all commerce in San Francisco. This tour will visit the sites of those events.

SUMMARY:“Wreckage: A Musical Tragicomedy” - SF Mime Troupe Opening weekend
DESCRIPTION:Opening day – July 3\, 4\, 2:00 PM at Dolores Park\, San Francisco \nIs it just us\, or does it feel like everything is falling apart?\nMary\, a flower seller barely managing to hold on in an increasingly unaffordable city\, must defend her street corner from invading evangelical Felicity\, who is herself torn between joyfully anticipating the Rapture and the discrepancies she’s found in her church’s accounting. Meanwhile Bobbie\, a successful software developer who realizes his new AI agent is far from intelligent\, is caught between telling his bosses at Anthropomorphic the dangerous truth\, or delivering a dud that will – despite endangering the world – boost the stock. And patriotic immigrant Lance joined the National Guard and now finds himself deployed against protesters who are exercising the very freedom of speech he joined the military to defend!\nHallucinating robots\, economic collapse\, protesting frogs\, people praying for the End of the World –\nThis is not the future\, or the democracy\, we were promised!\nBut the real question is: When it’s all over will there be enough left to build something new out of this…\nwreckage? \nWRECKAGE: A Musical Tragicomedy\nJuly 3 – Sept. 7\, 2026\nWritten by Michael Gene Sullivan\nMusic and Lyrics by Daniel Savio\nDirected by Lisa Hori-Garcia\nMusic Direction by Daniel Savio and Will Durkee

SUMMARY:Whistleblowers\, Injured Workers\, OSHA\, Workers Comp & Human Rights
DESCRIPTION:Zoom event \nThe threat to workers who get injured or sick on the job is growing. The elimination of any oversight of health and safety on the job and the lack of OSHA inspectors and oversight of dangerous working conditions is epidemic. The introduction of AI is adding to this deadly mix and the series of explosions and deaths is escalating. At the same time the workers comp system has meant that workers have to become lawyers to get their injuries taken care of and many are permanently disabled because of the failure to get prompt treatment at all. This panel will look at the issues\, struggles for justice and what workers and unions can do about this. \nSpeakers:\nAshley Gjovik – Apple Whistleblower\nJennifer Cruz – UCD Injured Worker\nBecky McClain – Pfizer Whistleblower\nBranton Philipps – Former Fremont Tesla Worker

SUMMARY:Labor History Bike Tour
DESCRIPTION:By Chris Carlsson of Shaping San Francisco \nTour starts at 518 Valencia St. near 16th St. (about 4 hours of tour)\nThe tour ends at Spear and Market.\nLabor History Bike Tour by Chris Carlsson (Shaping San Francisco)\nFrom the pre-urban history of Indian Slavery to the earliest 8-hour day movement in the U.S.\, the ebb and flow of class war is traced. SF’s radical working-class organizations are shaped in part by racist complicity in genocide and slavery\, but from the 1870s to the 1940s there are dozens of epic battles between owners and workers\, culminating in the 1934 General Strike and its aftermath. This is an entirely different look\, during a four-hour bike tour\, at San Francisco labor history.\nShaping San Francisco is asking for a donation of $25~$50.\n(Donation goes to Shaping San Francisco)\n(Limited capacity\, RSVP required. SUMMARY:Play - "Scabmuggers"
DESCRIPTION:At: The Freight – 2020 Addison Street\, Berkeley\, CA 94704 \nA new play by Yvonne Martinez\nJuly 7\, 14\, 21 2026 \nA play based on a labor organizer’s true story\n“At Harvard we fought a Trumpian bully and won” \nSynopsis: As soon as courses at Harvard began\, Ana\, a White female\, finds herself stalked by Aaron\, a Black male classmate who is set up on a bet by a White Trumpian bully classmate. Word quickly gets out to the rest of the cohort – but not wanting to get anyone kicked out\, Ana refuses to name names. She’s not a snitch. With the program director insisting there is nothing she can do to intervene if no one will name the perpetrator\, the class becomes engulfed in a campaign to protect Ana that splits the class into two camps. Some of the men join the women to fight the harassers\, some of women join the harassers. In short order the conflict becomes a fight for power that divides along race\, sex\, LGBTQ\, and class lines – that mirrors the heartbreaking history of the labor movement and serves as a precursor to our current political landscape.\nThere will be a post show discussion after each show.\nhttps://secure.thefreight.org/15960/15961-scabmuggers-260707

SUMMARY:Socialism in the American West - By Author Mark Kruger
DESCRIPTION:Zoom event \nWith Mark Kruger \nLabor historian Mark Kruger in his upcoming new book Socialism in the America West 1830-1954 provides a Kaleidoscopic narrative history of the socialist experience in the American west during the 19th and 20th century including utopia colonies\, the socialist and communist parties\, anarchists and the fight to transform the world.\nDuring the early industrial revolution in the United States\, the American West was invaded by financial and corporate capitalist\, and the development of technologies that intensified the exploitation of workers for great wealth. From the capitalist development of the West to the mass labor struggles in the 1930’s the rise of class consciousness and organization continued despite repression and witchhunts. Today with the rise of techno fascism this history is vital.\nHe is also the author of St. Louis Commune of 1877: Communism in the Heartland

SUMMARY:Book reading - “Exposed A Pfizer Scientist Battles Corruption\, Lies and Betrayal\, And Becomes A Biohazard Whistleblower" by Becky McClain
DESCRIPTION:At: Adobe Books & Arts Cooperative – 3130 24th St\, San Francisco\, CA 94110 \nBook reading by Becky McClain\nWhen Pfizer molecular biologist Becky McClain discovered a leaking biological cabinet in her laboratory\, she tried to get Pfizer to protect her workplace. She was retaliated against\, terrorized and fired as well as getting a genetic disease from the biological release.\nShe has to fight not only Pfizer but oversight agencies like OSHA and a corporate controlled judicial system that tried to stop your lawsuit and even threatened her husband who was a government employee. This struggle has exposed the systemic failure to protect biotech workers in laboratories and the dangers of other biological leaks as well as the corporate control of the media and even left media like Democracy Now which has refused to even cover the case.

SUMMARY:Left off the Program: The Censored History of Labor Theatre in America\, 1880-1940
DESCRIPTION:By Joel Eis\nAt: Bird & Beckett Bookstore \nSince the McCarthy era theatre texts have consistently expunged any mention of important contributions from the Left to the American Theatre. Professor Joel Eis\, author of 5 previous books on theater and politics and a radical theatre practitioner in the 1960s\, has unearthed and compiled the story of this sixty-year movement. From the first use of agitprop in the Yiddish theatre in 1887 to the first true theatre-in-the-round in Harlem in 1938\, this movement produced the most important plays\, playwrights and theater styles for the first half of the twentieth century. The talk will be accompanied by visuals.\nThe event will be in person and live streamed. \nClick on the live feed link at the top of our web site\, birdbeckett.com. after the event has begun to view in real time\, or You-tube\nFree event.

SUMMARY:New Opera "Echoes of Eureka"
DESCRIPTION:A powerful seven-movement opera about Chinese immigration to California by Artistic Director\, Eric Tuan with Chinese Historical Association\, San Francisco \nAt: Central Chinese High School Victory Hall: 829 Stockton Street\, San Francisco\, CA\, 94108 \nA NEW OPERA BRIDGING HISTORY AND HOPE\nPiedmont East Bay Children’s Choir proudly presents Echoes of Eureka\, a powerful seven-movement opera by Artistic Director\, Eric Tuan.\nThis inspiring new work brings to life a pivotal chapter of California’s history\, shedding light on the struggles and resilience of Chinese immigrants in the 19th century. Echoes of Eureka emerges as a timely piece\, resonating with contemporary conversations on justice\, inclusion\, and belonging.\nEchoes of Eureka follows the true story of Charley Wei Lum\, a young Chinese immigrant who arrived in 1880s California and settled in Eureka\, a thriving redwood logging town that housed the largest Chinese community in the state outside of San Francisco. During the height of the Gilded Age—a period of deep economic inequality and rising anti-immigrant sentiment—Charley and his community faced devastating violence.\nIn 1885\, an angry mob expelled Eureka’s 300 Chinese residents\, forcing them onto a steamship bound for San Francisco.\nCharley narrowly escaped lynching thanks to a compassionate clergyman. In the aftermath\, the exiled Chinese community took the unprecedented step of filing a federal lawsuit—the first known attempt at seeking reparations in U.S. history. The ways they fought back included several foundational Supreme Court cases\, including Wong Kim Ark\, which established the basis for birthright citizenship.\nComposer Eric Tuan reflects\, “I first heard this story in a book called Driven Out by historian Jean Pfaelzer\, which documents the hundreds of anti-Chinese deportations and lynchings that took place in California. I composed the seven-movement opera\, narrating the story in collaboration with Jean Pfaelzer\, fellow historian Alex Service\, and Humboldt Asians & Pacific Islanders in Solidarity. We’re very grateful to have received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to support the opera and presented the world premiere at our Making History Concert on April 12\, 2025 followed by performances in Eureka itself in May 2025. The resonances with our national life are striking\, and I hope you’ll attend one of our upcoming performances.” \nIn collaboration with the Chinese Historical Society of America\nAt: Central Chinese High School Victory Hall: 829 Stockton Street\, San Francisco\, CA\, 94108\nFree Admission: Donate Here To Support the Festival\nhttps://www.piedmontchoirs.org/spotlight-echoes-of-eureka
