They talk about why Minneapolis was targeted\, how people organized to defend the immigrant community and why the unions and trade unionists became involved in fighting back against the ICE terror tactics. \nMinneapolis which held a Teamster general strike in 1934 is connected to the fight today not only in Minneapolis but throughout the US. They also discuss the lessons of the San Francisco 1934 general strike and why this tactic of unions and working people is a critical tool to defend workers and fight the growing threats to working people and all democratic rights. \nThis is the first labor documentary to break the information blockade of the lessons of this historic struggle for working people in the US.

DESCRIPTION:Zoom event\nThis event was rescheduled on this day originally from July 23 \nBook Presentation of “Hubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism” By Professor Brian Kwoba – Associate Professor | Director of African and African American Studies (AAAS). \nThe fight against racism in the US has been historically tied to the fight of the working class for power. Hubert Harrison is one of the most important theoreticians and political activists in the Black working class movement and in solidarity with socialists like Eugene Debs who led the Socialist Party. \nIn an important book “Herbert Harrison Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism\,” Brian Kwoba looks at his life and the political development of Hubert Harrison and his political and theoretical contributions. He was a supporter of the Socialist Party and was influenced by the Russian revolution in 1917 which shook the world. The radical changes brought by the revolution encouraged workers and the oppressed in the US to look at what a radical transformation would mean particularly for women and the Black people of the United States.\nHarrison understood that imperialism leads to world war and he educated workers in the United States that these wars were a direct result of the capitalist system and it’s crisis. Kwoba’s work is an important contribution to his life and understanding the issues we face today as another world war is in front of us. \nHubert Harrison: Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism is an intellectual biography of the Caribbean-born working-class journalist\, activist\, and educator Hubert Henry Harrison (1883-1927)\, who generated an array of visionary solutions to the systemic injustices of his day. After blazing a trail for Black workers and organizers in the Socialist Party of America and the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW)\, Harrison emerged as the most prominent Black freethinker and free lover of his generation. He supported the Seattle General Strike\, practiced armed self-defense\, and called for an anti-capitalist\, anti-imperialist “Colored International” alliance in the face of European colonialism in Africa\, Asia\, Latin America\, and Ireland. Within 24 hours\, it involved over 100\,000 workers and shut down nearly all commerce in the East Bay for 3 1/2 days.

Hubert Harrison is one of the most important theoreticians and political activists in the Black working class movement and in solidarity with socialists like Eugene Debs who led the Socialist Party. \nIn an important book “Herbert Harrison Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism” Brian Kwoba looks at his life and the political development of Hubert Harrison and his political and theoretical contributions. He was a supporter of the Socialist Party and was influenced by the Russian revolution in 1917 which shook the world. The radical changes brought by the revolution encouraged workers and the oppressed in the US to look at what a radical transformation would mean particularly for women and the Black people of the United States. \nHarrison understood that imperialism leads to world war and he educated workers in the United States that these wars were a direct result of the capitalist system and it’s crisis. Kwoba’s work is an important contribution to his life and understanding the issues we face today as another world war is in front of us.

An important part of these purges is to shutdown any opposition to the genocide in Gaza and the growing role of the US in supporting wars in the Middle East. This panel will focus on three such cases where faculty and unionized graduate students were targeted and terminated or face suspension. \nProfessor Tom Alter was a faculty member at Texas State University and a union member of Texas State Employees Union CWA Local 6186. He was fired for speaking at a socialist conference and was accused of inciting violence. The attacks on democratic rights are under frontal Attack. \nProfessor Sang Hae Kil is a faculty member at San Jose State University and a member of the California Faculty Association CFA  who was an advisor of Students for Justice in Palestine. She was charged with organizing a protest against a Zionist professor and being anti-semitic. She recently won her job back in an arbitration. The CFA is affiliated with the SEIU. \nDylan Kupish is a UCLA graduate student who is a member of UAW 4811. Echoes of Eureka emerges as a timely piece\, resonating with contemporary conversations on justice\, inclusion\, and belonging.\nEchoes of Eureka follows the true story of Charley Wei Lum\, a young Chinese immigrant who arrived in 1880s California and settled in Eureka\, a thriving redwood logging town that housed the largest Chinese community in the state outside of San Francisco. During the height of the Gilded Age—a period of deep economic inequality and rising anti-immigrant sentiment—Charley and his community faced devastating violence.\nIn 1885\, an angry mob expelled Eureka’s 300 Chinese residents\, forcing them onto a steamship bound for San Francisco.\nCharley narrowly escaped lynching thanks to a compassionate clergyman. In the aftermath\, the exiled Chinese community took the unprecedented step of filing a federal lawsuit—the first known attempt at seeking reparations in U.S. history. The Labor Education Project For AFL-CIO International Operations LEPAIO has opposed the AFL-CIO funding of it’s international operations and at the recent Labor Notes convention passed out a statement about the US government funding of the Solidarity Center. \nAt this panel there will be a report on what happened at the Labor Notes meeting and why the issue of international solidarity and the  AFL-CIO was left out. While there were panels on international labor solidarity\, the issue and role of the AFL-CIO was not addressed. \nThe  AFL-CIO’s Solidarity Center’s operations was also not addressed. There will also be a report on building international solidarity with the Colombian GM workers who have had an encampment at the Bogota embassy for over 15 years. Professor Joel Eis\, author of 5 previous books on theater and politics and a radical theatre practitioner in the 1960s\, has unearthed and compiled the story of this sixty-year movement. From the first use of agitprop in the Yiddish theatre in 1887 to the first true theatre-in-the-round in Harlem in 1938\, this movement produced the most important plays\, playwrights and theater styles for the first half of the twentieth century.
