SUMMARY:Race to the bottom: Vietnamese female migrant workers’ vulnerability\, double burden and health risks in market socialism
DESCRIPTION:Zoom event \nWith Dr. Angie Ngọc Trần (and contribution from Vietnam)\nVietnam Working Class Voices & History With CSU\nThe massive industrialization of Vietnam and the conditions of women migrant workers is a serious issue and the focus of this report. \nSince the 1990s\, Vietnam’s export-led growth has relied heavily on young women migrating from rural areas to work in the world’s major manufacturing hubs for garment and footwear factories\, and increasingly\, electronics. Almost four decades later\, many of these workers face growing insecurity as they age\, still having to navigate unstable employment that fails to keep up with rising costs\, while having to care for their children in poor-quality temporary migrant workers’ housing. Behind the country’s impressive economic growth figures\, workers toil under exploitative conditions and low pay\, creating vicious cycles of insecurity\, forcing them to constantly search for jobs that could make ends meet. She obtained a doctorate in political economy at the University of Southern California and has been teaching at CSU Monterey Bay since 1996. She has researched and published on transnational labor migration and resistance in Vietnam and Malaysia\, as well as the farm guestworkers program between the US and Mexico. Her 2013 book\, Ties that Bind: Cultural Identity\, Class\, and Law in Vietnam’s Labor Resistance\, chronicles over 100 years of labor movements\, domestic labor migration\, and resistance in Vietnam since French colonial rule to Vietnam’s market socialism in the 21st century. Her 2022 book\, Ethnic Dissent and Empowerment: Economic Migration between Vietnam and Malaysia\, integrates ethnicity\, class\, gender\, religion and cultural resources\, and third space of dissent and empowerment of five different ethnic groups in Vietnam while working as guestworkers in Malaysia and after they return to Vietnam. During and after Covid-19\, she published articles to expose female worker vulnerabilities\, exploitative and abusive working conditions and sexual violence\, under the Vietnam-Saudi labor agreement that sends Vietnamese female workers to work as maids in Saudi Arabia. Her 2026 book chapter\, “Weakening of Social Protection in Vietnam: Labor Legislation\, Cicada Capital\, Civil Society\,” analyzes creeping marketization\, privatization\, and financialization of social protection in Vietnam\, leaving workers scrambling to fend for themselves and their families. The ILWU was formed out of that strike\, and today\, it is one of the most powerful and democratic unions in the United States.\nA key leader of the strike was Harry Bridges\, an Australian American who was part of a group called the Albion Group that began the organization to take over the corrupt ILA local.\nThis film is the best film made about who Harry Bridges was. He and his union the CFA organized a defense campaign with other workers and community members who had been targeted and attacked and this was successful and led to an acquittal. This has lessons for all workers and the labor movement

They will discuss this history and how this was an important part of the struggle of the strike. \nClarence Thomas was formerly Secretary Treasurer of ILWU Local 10 & Publisher of Workers On the ILWU history including the Million Workers March\nJudy Junita was in the Black Panthers at SF State\, a poet and retired professor at Laney State College. She edited the BPP newspaper and worked in the Breakfast for Children program while finishing her BA at SF State. Five days after graduating\, she became the youngest professor of the nation’s first black studies program.

An important part of these purges is to shutdown any opposition to the genocide in Gaza and the growing role of the US in supporting wars in the Middle East. This panel will focus on three such cases where faculty and unionized graduate students were targeted and terminated or face suspension. \nProfessor Tom Alter was a faculty member at Texas State University and a union member of Texas State Employees Union CWA Local 6186. He was fired for speaking at a socialist conference and was accused of inciting violence. The attacks on democratic rights are under frontal Attack. \nProfessor Sang Hae Kil is a faculty member at San Jose State University and a member of the California Faculty Association CFA  who was an advisor of Students for Justice in Palestine. She was charged with organizing a protest against a Zionist professor and being anti-semitic. She recently won her job back in an arbitration. The CFA is affiliated with the SEIU. \nDylan Kupish is a UCLA graduate student who is a member of UAW 4811. Hubert Harrison is one of the most important theoreticians and political activists in the Black working class movement and in solidarity with socialists like Eugene Debs who led the Socialist Party. \nIn an important book “Herbert Harrison Forbidden Genius of Black Radicalism” Brian Kwoba looks at his life and the political development of Hubert Harrison and his political and theoretical contributions. He was a supporter of the Socialist Party and was influenced by the Russian revolution in 1917 which shook the world. The radical changes brought by the revolution encouraged workers and the oppressed in the US to look at what a radical transformation would mean particularly for women and the Black people of the United States. \nHarrison understood that imperialism leads to world war and he educated workers in the United States that these wars were a direct result of the capitalist system and it’s crisis. Kwoba’s work is an important contribution to his life and understanding the issues we face today as another world war is in front of us.

This attack by the Democrats in even having a discussion about single payer is part of a long history of how the insurance\, hospital and pharmacy industry have controlled both the State government and national government. Milions of people in California and throughout the country are losing their healthcare with cuts in Medicaid and the ending of subsidies of ACA. The closure of rural hospitals\, the growing collapse of public healthcare with massive budget cuts is combined with union busting at Kaiser and other HMOs. Kaiser just spent over $1 billion to break the strike of 30\,000 heatlhcare workers in Northern California.
