Historical panel looking back at the Bracero Program to today, largely based on the video oral history interview of Al Rojas, conducted in 2002 and 2003 for The Latino Leadership Oral History Program, Ctr. for Oral History U.C. Berkeley by AL Stein & Richard Candida Smith.
Jose Angel will discuss his book & research on the FBI surveillance of Rojas during the Pittsburgh Grape Boycott of the 1960s. Desiree Rojas will shed light on her family/organizing experiences, and discuss the living legacy and important work of the Al Rojas Foundation, incorporated in 2024. Dr. Paul Ortiz Will offer his perspectives as a labor oral historian. He was historical consultant for
“American Historia: The Untold History of Latinos” exploring Latino history and the consequences of omitting the past. The three-part PBS series began airing Sept. 27, 2024.

Albert Rojas was a staunch defender of farmworkers and prominent member of UFW, who struggled during his entire life against the exploitation and abuses of the transnational agricultural enterprises.
During his final years of activism, he joined thousands of farmworkers in the boycott of Driscoll’s, the world’s largest berry distributor.
