Presentation by Gordon H. Chang and Laurence H. Shoup.
Join us for presentations that focus on important labor strikes that occurred during the building of the Transcontinental Railroad and those that followed. Examples include the historic eight-day strike that stopped construction of the Central Pacific Railroad in 1867 and the 1894 Pullman strike. California was the second most important center of this nationwide strike, which saw armed workers take over sections of the Southern Pacific line in the state. This was part of a giant struggle for an industrial union in the nation’s most important industry.
