SUMMARY:The Gig Economy\, Privacy\, Automation and AI
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco Bay Area is ground zero for the world tech transformation from platforms at Uber and Lyft to social media networks like Facebook and search engines like Google. The collection of big data without privacy rights\, or the introduction of automation by Tesla and AI without any real controls and regulations\, is not only injuring workers but also threatens public rights as our emotions and every private move are captured for profit. The “gig” worker in our automated economy is becoming the majority of workers in the United States and every other developed country. The impact of algorithmic and data-driven management of human workers is happening today at an mind numbing speed\, and this panel will look at these technologies and their impact on workers and our society. \nInitial speakers:\nTodd Davies\, Symbolic System Program\, Stanford; Center for the Study of Language and Information\nBrian Dolber\, California State University of San Marcos\, Communications and The Gig Economy\nMehmet Bayron\, LaborNet\, Software\, Exploitation and Automation of Tech Workers\nEdward Escobar\, The Alliance For Independent Workers \nLocation: Stanford University – Margaret Jacks Hall is in the Main Quad building. Go to the front section of the Main Quad\, at Palm Drive (the Oval) and enter Building 460 on the right. \nSponsored by LaborNet.org

SUMMARY:Early Farm Labor Organizing\, 1935’s Sebastopol Apple Pickers Strike\, and the ACLU’s Role-
DESCRIPTION:Presentation and Discussion of Sol Nitzberg:Sponsored by California Historical Society\nJoin Barry Nitzberg\, grandson of tar-and-feathering victim Sol Nitzberg\, and historian Ken Kann\, for a retrospective on early farm labor organizing and vigilante terror in Sonoma County\, California. Learn about the 1935 Sebastopol apple pickers strike\, the assault on Barry’s grandfather and other labor organizers\, the local community leaders who comprised the vigilantes\, and the ACLU role in the following trial. Barry and Ken review the impacts of the violence on Sonoma County\, its left-wing Jewish chicken ranching community\, and the Nitzberg family. Barry Nitzberg has deep roots in the historic Jewish chicken ranching community of Petaluma\, where he was born and raised. The grandson of Sol Nitzberg— chicken rancher\, labor organizer\, and tar and feathering victim—Barry and his family are featured in Ken Kann’s oral history of three generations of this unique immigrant community. Ken is a historian and author of Comrades and Chicken Ranchers; The Story of a California Jewish Community. \nYou can watch the presentation of this event by clicking here\nReview of this event by Oliver Pollak

SUMMARY:Whistle Blowers and Workers Rights
DESCRIPTION:Whistleblowers on the job are under attack. This forum will hear from whistleblowers about their struggle to defend health and safety and the public. Their actions are taking place in a period of growing financial corruption in our society. One of the whistleblowers\, Darrell Whitman\, who is a member of AFGE and worked as an investigator at the OSHA whistleblower protection program\, tried to investigate retaliation against whistleblowers from Wells Fargo\, Lockheed Martin\, FedEx and Test America. He himself was harassed\, bullied\, and illegally fired. When workers at regulatory agencies stand up for worker rights and they are removed we have a real crisis. The growing systemic corruption that working people and the public face is being challenged despite the dangers and at this forum we will learn from those who have been speaking truth to power. \nInitial speakers: Darrell Whitman\, Former OSHA Whistleblower Protection Program Cheryl Thornton\, SEIU 1021 CCSF Worker at Potrero Hill Health Center Matthew Zugsberger\, UBC 34 Whistleblower at NPS Drakes Bay Estuary Project Yesenia Guitron\, Whistleblower at Wells Fargo Bank Johnny Burris\, Whistleblower at J.P. SUMMARY:Film : Pride 2014 (120 min.) UK
DESCRIPTION:FilmWorks United International Working Class Film & Video Festival\nDirected by Matthew Warchus (UK)\nThe unity of workers and oppressed minorities is the story of Pride. In a successful effort to break the miners’ union\, former Prime Minister Thatcher decided to force the National Union of Miners out on strike during 1984-1985. This movie encapsulates that strong support the miners and their families had from the people of the UK. The Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners (LGSM) was an alliance of lesbians and gay men who formed in support of the striking British miners during the yearlong UK miners strike. Despite initial and difficult efforts to break through the socially conservative miners’ communities they finally joined together in a common struggle for workers justice and human rights. By the end of the strike there were eleven chapters throughout the UK\, and the miners ended up leading London’s Lesbian and Gay Pride parade in 1985. This powerful story\, through comedy and real history\, tells us how we can build working class unity.

SUMMARY:Film : Dare To Struggle Dare To Win\, 1968 (96 min.) France
DESCRIPTION:FilmWorks United International Working Class Film & Video Festival\nDirected by Jea-Pierre Thorn (France)\n50th Anniversary of May-June General Strike France\nIn the middle of the May-June French General Strike in 1968 Jean Pierre-Thorn\, a film student at University of Paris\, takes his camera to the Flins Renault auto plant and ends up in the middle of the workers struggle during these events. This is an intimate and close-up look at the struggle of the French workers during that historic strike and occupation by French workers. We see how the occupation took place from the inside and the role of the students who also were supporting the occupation. The strikers not only had to fight the bosses but also the CGT (France’s largest trade union federation) and the closely linked French Communist Party (PCF)\, who were both opposed to the general strike. Also depicted in the film are the heroic attempts of as many as 5\,000 students and workers from other workplaces and regions to reach the factory in its rural location to support the occupation. The police\, also numbering in the thousands\, attempted to block them from reaching the factory\, so the street fighting in the small town of Flins takes on a similar appearance to the battles of the Latin Quarter in Paris\, as local residents support the strikers and their supporters who came to show their solidarity. Following the film there will be a discussion.

SUMMARY:Tom Mooney and Preparedness Day Bombing Walk
DESCRIPTION:With Gifford Hartman\, David Duckworth \nDuring this walking tour\, we visit several sites\, which were integral to the unfolding of events following a bomb explosion on Steuart Street at Market Street on July 22\, 1916. With fervor building to engage the United States in the war in Europe\, businessmen in San Francisco embraced the cause\, while labor leaders and the left denounced it. With the bomb killing ten people and wounding forty\, no clear culprit was identified. But\, two figures from the left\, labor organizers and anarchists Tom Mooney and Warren K. Billings\, were framed for the murder of the victims and spent many years in prison before being released. On this tour\, we learn not only about the war between business and labor and open and closed union shops\, but also about the divisive issues of American aggression in the Pacific region and against Mexico\, crusading and yellow journalism in the city of San Francisco\, and the mood of the country regarding World War I. The tour lasts approximately two hours. David Duckworth is an art and cultural historian\, having lectured widely\, including at California Institute of Integral Studies\, Free University\, LaborFest\, New York University\, Popular Culture/American Culture Association\, and Treasure Island Museum. Gifford Hartman is an adult educator\, labor trainer\, working class historian\, and has been a rank-and-file militant in various industries (some organized by the SEIU and ILWU\, and other non-union shops) and presently works in the unorganized precarious education sector.

SUMMARY:Angel Island and Trial of Harry Bridges
DESCRIPTION:With Harvey Schwartz \nHarry Bridges\, the Australian-born founding president of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union\, was hounded by government investigations\, hearings\, and trials from 1934 to 1955. As the leader of the famous 1934 Pacific Coast Maritime and San Francisco General Strikes\, Bridges was the target of powerful conservative forces in and out of government. In 1939\, U.S. federal authorities conducted a hearing on Angel Island to determine whether there were legal grounds to deport the foreign-born labor leader as an alien Communist. The Angel Island hearing attracted major media attention and remains an important historical event in Bay Area labor and immigration history. The 1939 Bridges inquiry was a prelude to the later witch-hunts of the McCarthy era\, with its persecution of immigrants\, radicals\, labor activists\, and dissenters of every stripe. Harvey Schwartz\, curator of the ILWU Oral History Collection\, will explore the circumstances surrounding the Bridges hearing and describe the trials that followed it\, which reached the U.S. Supreme Court twice. In an era of difficult times for organized labor\, renewed intolerance\, and anti-immigrant national politics\, knowledge of the Bridges Angel Island hearing remains as relevant today as it was in 1939. \nMeet at the benches in front of the entrance stairs to the U.S. Immigration Station. SUMMARY:Dying to Work: Death and Injury in the American Workplace
DESCRIPTION:Book reading by Jonathan Karmel \nWriter and labor lawyer Jonathan Karmel has written a book about the cost to workers and their families of the lack of health and safety protection on the job. He visits workers and gets their stories on the deaths and permanent injuries that have destroyed their lives. He also looks at the complete failure of the workers compensation system\, which has been taken over by the employers and insurance industry. This means that seriously injured workers are being left out in the cold\, ending up permanently disabled by the obstacles and roadblocks placed by insurance companies and a worker comp system now run by profiteers.\n\nhttps://newworkplace.wordpress.com/2018/03/30/jonathan-karmels-dying-to-work/

SUMMARY:The History of California Slavery by Jean Pfaelzer
DESCRIPTION:Slavery\, observed Frederick Douglass\, is a “hydra-headed monster.” In California this monster appeared and reappeared as if shape-shifting. The history of slavery in California unsettles the North/South view of American slave labor. This is a history of captivity\, flight and resistance\, of Indians held captive at the missions\, Alaska natives brought to Fort Ross in Sonoma County\, enslaved African Americans transported for the Gold Rush\, a West Coast Underground Railroad\, Native Americans who were legally kidnapped and forced into indentured slavery\, Chinese prostitutes held in cages in SF\, convict laborers sold from San Quentin\, and modern victims of labor and sex trafficking. Jean Pfaelzer is the author of California Bound: The History of Slavery in California (forthcoming 2019)\, and Driven Out: the Forgotten War Against Chinese Americans. She’s the author of many other books\, has written for Huffington Post\, the Globalist\, curated for the Smithsonian\, and speaks regularly on NPR and Pacifica.\nYou can watch her presentation on July 23\, 2018 – click here.

SUMMARY:Nordic Workers\, Union and Labor Rights - by Jordin Williams
DESCRIPTION:American-Swedish trade unionist Jordin Williams will discuss how workers are organized across the Nordic spectrum: Iceland\, Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and Denmark. He will give a Powerpoint presentation to discuss labor rights and labor laws and the issues that they face. The rights of Swedish workers on the job allow greater unionization and solidarity than is allowed under U.S. laws. While the rate of unionization has dropped from 80% to 70%\, it is still far greater than the unionization in the U.S. where over 12\,000 workers are fired every year for even trying to form a union. European unions and labor rights are under attack by companies\, as in the case of airline Ryanair’s use of foreign temporary workers; this will be discussed at this forum.

SUMMARY:Film : Port Triumph (Puerto el Triunfo) 2017 (62 min.)
DESCRIPTION:FilmWorks United International Working Class Film & Video Festival \nDirected by Jeffrey Gould \nThis film by Jeffrey Gould\, a history professor at the University of Indiana\, looks at an important labor struggle of shrimp workers at Port Triumph in El Salvador. El Salvador had a large shrimp industry\, which mostly exported to the United States. More than 1\,500 shrimp packinghouse workers\, who were mostly women\, organized and won important gains at Puerto el Triunfo (Port Triumph). As a result of the growing murderous repression\, the union collapsed and the industry as well was decimated by the 1990s. The U.S.-supported civil war in El Salvador not only led the death of thousands of workers and their families but also forced many of these workers to escape to the United States This film provides a personal view of why workers from Central America have been forced to immigrate and their struggle for survival.

SUMMARY:The Exploitation of Part-Time College Faculty - Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Part of the so-called American Dream is the notion that if you work hard and get a good education you will make a decent living. However\, many of our most educated workera are teachers in higher education institutions and suffer from the worldwide trend\, endured by an increasing number of workers\, of being grossly underpaid and overworked with few rights and benefits while simultaneously enduring great job insecurity. College teachers facing these conditions are known as adjuncts\, part-timers\, freeway flyers\, or road scholars. When there are unions where they work\, they are often poorly represented. Their needs are inadequately addressed\, compared to their more privileged tenured\, full-time colleagues\, by union “leaders” who claim to favor social justice and equality. The panel will draw on their experiences and describe the difficulties these instructors face. They will discuss why these unjust conditions exist and what can be done to end them. We will encourage audience participation. \nInitial speakers:\nCarol Lang\, Adjunct History professor at City University of New York John Holmes\, Teaches History at Merritt and Diablo Valley Colleges Margaret Hanzimanolis\, Teaches writing at De Anza College Rick Baum\, Teaches Political Science at City College of San Francisco Sponsored by Defend Public Education Now!

DESCRIPTION:FilmWorks United International Working Class Film & Video Festival \nReserve Slaves (Schiavi di Riserva) 2018 (30 min.) Italy \nDirected by Michelangelo Severgnini \nThe result of the U.S./European attack on Libya has been the restoration of slavery. SUMMARY:Film: Turkey on the Edge 2018 (53 min.) Turkey
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Imre Azem\, 2018 (53 min.) Turkey. \nFour following years the Gezi Resistance\, great political and social changes were instituted in Turkey. Director İmre Azem follows four people striving for democracy\, from Gezi to a July 15th attempted coup\, a subsequent state of emergency\, and finally an april 16th\, 2017 referendum. The rise of Turkey’s dictator Recep Erdogan and his attack on academics and the people of Turkey is the focus of this documentary. The documentary shows the rise and struggle of the Gezi Resistance\, which was a fight against privatization of a park in Istanbul. Erdogan wanted to pave it over with a private development for his cronies. The use of fundamentalism and racism against Kurds and other minorities has a long history in Turkey. Azem links the struggle in Gezi to the July 15th coup attempt and a state of emergency to crush any political opposition while expanding the war in Syria. He also shows the April 16th\, 2017 referendum by focusing on the people who are fighting for democracy and equality for all. Following the films there will be a discussion hosted by the Solidarity Committee with the People of Turkey. \n \nTurkey on the Edge – (Trailer) from Kibrit Film on Vimeo.

SUMMARY:Oakland 1946 General Strike Walk
DESCRIPTION:Meet at the fountain in Latham Square\, at the intersection where Telegraph and Broadway converge\, across from the Rotunda Building (Oakland City Center/12th St. BART). \nWith Gifford Hartman of the Flying Picket Historical Society.\nThis year is the 72nd anniversary of the Oakland General Strike. This walk will revisit the sites of Oakland’s “Work Holiday” that spontaneously began with rankand- file solidarity with the striking\, mostly women retail clerks at Kahn’s and Hastings department stores\, where picket lines were broken by police-escorted scabs. Within 24 hours\, it involved over 100\,000 workers and shut down nearly all commerce in the East Bay for 54 hours. In 1946 there were six general strikes across the U.S.; that year set the all-time record year for strikes and work stoppages. The Oakland “Work Holiday” was the last general strike to ever occur in the U.S. This walk and history talk will attempt to keep alive the memory of this tradition of community-wide working class solidarity.

SUMMARY:Play : Fight for 52¢ - Written and Performed by Howard Petrick - 70 min.
DESCRIPTION:San Francisco actor and writer Howard Petrick takes a look at the 1934 Minneapolis general strike through the eyes of one of its leaders\, V.R. Dunne. The Minneapolis Teamster General Strike was one of three successful strikes that year that built the rise of industrial unionism and labor rights. We learn Dunne’s story through his working class life in the depths of the 1930’s depression\, which led to his political development. It includes the violence that striking workers faced at the hands of police. He also describes how the use of a Women’s Auxiliary enabled the striking workers to succeed. He discusses the importance of cultural and worker solidarity\, which was a critical part in the victory of the general strike. Today\, as millions of workers are being marginalized\, these lessons continue to be relevant. Petrick\, through his art\, makes them come alive. \nhttps://howardpetrick.com \n\nCLOSING PARTY will follow performance.\nBring a contribution of food\, beverage for potluck\, or instrument for the open mic.
