The Exploitation of Part-Time College Faculty – Panel Discussion

July 25, 2018 @ 7:00 pm

: Free

Part of the so-called American Dream is the notion that if you work hard and get a good education you will make a decent living. However, many of our most educated workera are teachers in higher education institutions and suffer from the worldwide trend, endured by an increasing number of workers, of being grossly underpaid and overworked with few rights and benefits while simultaneously enduring great job insecurity. College teachers facing these conditions are known as adjuncts, part-timers, freeway flyers, or road scholars. When there are unions where they work, they are often poorly represented. Their needs are inadequately addressed, compared to their more privileged tenured, full-time colleagues, by union “leaders” who claim to favor social justice and equality. The panel will draw on their experiences and describe the difficulties these instructors face. They will discuss why these unjust conditions exist and what can be done to end them. We will encourage audience participation.

Initial speakers:
Carol Lang, Adjunct History professor at City University of New York John Holmes, Teaches History at Merritt and Diablo Valley Colleges Margaret Hanzimanolis, Teaches writing at De Anza College Rick Baum, Teaches Political Science at City College of San Francisco Sponsored by Defend Public Education Now!
